Originally founded in New York, SEAM Design Ltd. established itself in the UK in 2009. With more than 35 years of collective international experience in the profession, SEAM understands that architects demand the highest quality of design integrity from their consultants and works in collaboration with architects to bring clarity to the architectural expression. In an obvious sense, lighting design is about place making and providing the highest quality, sustainable environments, but in its ephemeral quality it is about atmosphere and mood - a dynamic relationship where lighting design courts the architectural experience. SEAM approaches light as a material that occupies space and folds it into the architectural design. Through an established familiarity with the industry’s latest technologies, sustainable measures are incorporated from design inception as a professional responsibility rather than as a cost plan line item. This balanced and informed approach generates energy efficient proposals that are mindful of operational requirements for their immediate users as well as the future demands of the proposal to design out technological obsolescence. SEAM is a team of designers who bring specialist knowledge from multidisciplinary backgrounds including electrical engineering, architecture, lighting design, interior design, product and graphic design. Through engaged dialogue with the architects, SEAM strives to hone the conceptual identity and create bespoke lighting solutions integrated into the project design ethos. This cultivation of identity, or identities, connects the architecture to people, and thereby connects a project to the culture it engages.
